Biography

There is a modest portion of Yankees fans who encourage the team to hold onto their talented young players and let them develop, perhaps due to an attachment to the homegrown bunch that helped the franchise win four World Series titles in five years in the late 1990s.

However, as our old friend Harlan once wrote, those championship clubs had a considerable amount of veteran talent infused in them as well, which was acquired by dealing prospects in notable trades. Not every prospect can turn into a Derek Jeter or Bernie Williams, and while it makes sense to hold on to some of them, the 1996-2001 Yankees would not have been the same with Russ Davis instead of Tino Martinez.

Raised in Tampa, Florida he played college ball at the University of Tampa, where he was an All-American all three years he was at the school. He was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the first found (14th pick) in the 1988 Major League Baseball Draft.

Martinez played in the Major Leagues from 1990-2005. He was with the Mariners from 1990-95 and then played for the New York Yankees from 1996-2001, helping them win World Series titles in 1996 and 1998-2000. He played in two All-Star Games, in 1995 and 1997. After leaving the Yankees Martinez played for the St. Louis Cardinals in 2002-03, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 2004, and finished his career back with the Yankees in 2005. He later served as a special instructor to the Yankees, starting in 2008, and was a hitting coach for the Miami Marlins in 2013. He also did some color commentary of Yankee games on the YES Network.

Martinez was inducted into the College Baseball Hall of Fame. Since 2010,
