It is my pleasure to introduceProfessor Tan Chorh Chaun as the recipient of an honorary degree from the University of Bristol.

Professor Tan was born in Singapore and studied Medicine at the National University of Singapore.He then elected to specialise in renal medicine. During his clinical training in the early 1990s he decided to undertake a PhD entitled "Regulation of Erythropoietin messenger RNA" and did this under the supervision of Dr Peter Ratcliffe and Professor John Ledinghamat the Institute of Molecular Medicine in Oxford University. This was early in the evolution of our understanding of the critical responses cells have to hypoxia (low oxygen levels), and it contributed to the body of work that last year led to (now ProfessorSir) Peter Radcliffe being co-awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine.

Professor Tan Chorh Chuan was appointed Permanent Secretary of National Research and Development, Permanent Secretary (Public Sector Science and Technology Policy and Plans Office), Prime Minister’s Office, and Chairman of the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) on 1 Oct 2023. In addition, he will continue with his appointments as the Chairman of MOHT and the Chair of MOH’s Healthier SG Implementation Office.

Prof Tan served as the inaugural Chief Health Scientist and Executive Director of the new Office for Healthcare Transformation in Singapore’s Ministry of Health from 1 January 2018 to 30 September 2023. He was President of the National University of Singapore (NUS) from 2008 to 201

Professor Tan Chorh Chuan (Class of 1977), Executive Director of the Office for Healthcare Transformation and Chief Health Scientist at the Ministry of Health, was recognised for his exceptional contributions in education, research and service to the National University of Singapore (NUS), to Singapore and to the global community with the prestigious Outstanding Service Award. The Outstanding Service Award was conferred on Prof Tan at the annual NUS University Awards on 28 May 2019.

Mrs Phyllis Lim, Principal, CJC, noted, “Prof Tan’s sterling contributions to Singapore inspires us to strive for excellence and to serve Singapore with fervor and dedication. Together with the CJ community, we send Prof Tan our heartiest congratulations on the award.”
