So, we can start with a question? Name me another musician who played with both Ted Fio Rito and (maybe) Frank Zappa? Aside from Jimmy Zito. Time's up. No, it's not some kind of trick question. I doubt there was another. But wait a second, Jimmy Who? Even if you're a trumpet devotee, Zito's name is probably not a familiar one to you. Zeets, as he was known, was one of the elite West Coast studio trumpet players in the 1960s and 1970s, but his career had begun in Chicago in the late 1930s. By the 1970s, he had been around the block a few times, so if you were into swing bands, or even just a more than casual fan of jazz in Southern California, you may have seen or heard of him. He worked in what Leonard Feather, in another characteristically charitable evaluation, called "the commercial salt mines." Well, yeah. Even trumpet players must eat. So, there was that.

Vincent Zito, known as Jimmy, one of the brothers associated in A. Zito & Sons bakery, which closed on Bleecker St. at the end of May, died in his sleep at home in Hollandale, Fla., on Aug. 1 at the age of 90.

He was injured in a fall in January and had circulatory problems, said his stepson, Dan Patrissy.

Born in the Village to immigrants from Sicily, he was one of five brothers who with their father, Anthony, ran the bakery that became a Village institution. In recent years, however, Jimmy became less active in the bakery and spent more time at his home in Florida. His wife, Talia, died in 1998.

In addition to his stepson, Dan Patrissy, another stepson, Michael Patrissy, survives. His brother, Julio Zito, who was active in the bakery until it closed, and his nephew, Julio’s son, Anthony, who managed the bakery, also survive, as well as another brother, Jack, of Baltimore.

James “Jimmy” Victor Zito passed away on October 18,​2023, at the age of 76, in his hometown of Sun City, Arizona. Jimmy was born to Joseph and Mary Zito on May 29, 1947, in Phoenix, Arizona. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Gene Zito.

An extremely proud father and grandfather, he is survived by son, Brian Zito; daughter, Lisa Gardner (Adam); his “one and only” granddaughter, Emma Gardner, who called him“ Papa;” sister, Terri Steffen (David); niece, Sierra Lovegrove (Spencer); many cousins, a special one being Stanley Warren.

A friend to all, Jimmy made everyone laugh with his winning personality. He always enjoyed a good joke. He never met a stranger and leaves many friends and family who will miss him deeply.

He served in the Navy on the nuclear submarine, the U.S.S. Will Rogers. Jim retired from Southwest Airlines. H
