Om Prakash Bhandari (9 March 1917 – 9 January 2003),[1] better known as Qamar Jalalabadi, was an Indian poet and lyricist of songs for Hindi movies.[2][3] He composed the title track of the popular television serial Vikram Aur Betaal.

Early life

He was born as Om Prakash Bhandari in a Punjabi family on 9 March 1917[2] in Jalalabad, a village near Beas in Amritsar district, Punjab, India. Right from the age of seven, he started writing poetry in Urdu.[3] There was no encouragement from home, but a wandering poet named Amar Chand Amar met him in his hometown and encouraged him to write, recognising his immense talent and potential.[2] He also gave him the penname of Qamar which means moon, and Jalalabadi was added for his native town. It was the general trend in those days for writers to name themselves after the towns they hailed from. Om Prakash Bhandari popularly known as Qamar Jalalabadi, began his life on March 9th, 1917 in Jalalabad (now in Pakistan) as. His father, Lala Harjasrai Bhandari, was a storekeeper for granaries in the British Raj for few years and later took care of the farms and family property in Jalalabad. Om Prakash started writing poetry at an early age though there was no legacy of music or poetry in the family.He completed his Matriculation from Kapurthala in Punjab and started a career in journalism in Lahore. He worked for papers like Daily Milap, Daily Pratap, Nirala, and Star Shahkaar. He also started gaining popularity as a shaayar. As a result he was recruited by Pancholi Arts Pictures in 1942 to write lyrics for some of the songs of their film Zamindaar whose music was being given by Ghulam Haider sahib. He wrote 4 – 5 songs for this movie and two of them were in partnership with Behzad Lakhnavi. Qamar Jalalvi (1887–1968, Urdu: قمَر جلالوی) (born Muhammad Husain and also known as Ustad Qamar Jalalvi) was a Pakistani poet, author and writer.

Early life

He was born in Jalali near Aligarh, India, 1887, and died on 4 October 1968. After the creation of Pakistan in 1947, he moved to Karachi.[1]

Life

Qamar Jalalvi is regarded as one of the best classical Urdu Ghazal poets. His ghazal poetry has a unique simplicity of expression.

A poet from the age of eight, Qamar Jalalvi's writing had become quite popular by the time he was in his 20s.

He lived a life of financial hardship, working for many years at bicycle repair shops. In India and Pakistan, a teacher of arts is known as Ustad (master), and the term is also loosely used to refer to any skilled worker. Qamar Jalalvi was initially called Ustad because of his bicycle work. Popular with critics for his mastery of poetry as well; they dubbed him Ustad Qamar Jalalvi once his poetry became popular.
