Meet The Real Life Tihar Jailer Sunil Gupta From Netflix's Recent Series Black Warrant

Sunil Gupta, the former superintendent of Tihar Jail, Delhi's highest security jail has now again become a prominent figure. This is following the release of the Netflix series Black Warrant. Based on his real-life experiences and the book Black Warrant: Confessions of a Tihar Jailer, co-written with journalist Sunetra Chowdhary, the series sheds light on the inner workings of India's most notorious prison.

The series is directed by Vikramaditya Motwane, it has also sparked conversations around the systemic issues in Indian prisons, including corruption, gang wars, and security lapses.

Hero, with a Non-heroic Entry

Gupta's journey to Tihar jail began in 1981 when he left a stable job at Indian Railways to pursue his dream of donning the khaki uniform. His modest background and lack of physical dominance, as shown in the series, did not discourage him from being a jailer at India's most notorious jail, though his traits were not traditionally emphasized for prison officers at the time.
