Professor Jagdish Bhagwati, is University Professor at Columbia University and Senior Fellow in International Economics at the Council on Foreign Relations. He has been Economic Policy Adviser to Arthur Dunkel, Director General of GATT (1991-93), Special Adviser to the UN on Globalization, and External Adviser to the WTO. He has served on the Expert Group appointed by the Director General of the WTO on the Future of the WTO and the Advisory Committee to Secretary General Kofi Annan on the NEPAD process in Africa, and was also a member of the Eminent Persons Group under the chairmanship of President Fernando Henrique Cardoso on the future of UNCTAD.

Professor Bhagwati has published more than three hundred articles and has authored or edited over fifty volumes; he also writes frequently for The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Financial Times, as well as reviews for The New Republic and The Times Literary Supplement. He founded the Journal of International Economics in 1971 and another journal, Economics & Politics, in 1989.

Jagdish Bhagwati was born and raised in India. He went to Cambridge University in 1954 and graduated from there in 1956 with a first in Economics Tripos (Tripos refers to the system of honors degrees and examinations at Cambridge). He then studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Oxford, returning to India in 1961 as professor of economics at the Indian Statistical Institute in New Delhi. In 1963, he moved to the Delhi School of Economics as professor of international trade. He visited Columbia University during 1966–1967 and joined the permanent faculty of MIT in 1968, where he later became the Ford International Professor of Economics. In 1980, Bhagwati joined Columbia as Arthur Lehman Professor of Economics and Professor of Political Science. In 2001, he became a University Professor at Columbia University.

Biography

Prof Jagdish N Bhagwati is one of the world’s foremost scholars and most influential economists. He has been described as the most creative international trade theorist of his generation. While his scientific writings have influenced all aspects of international trade, Prof Bhagwati has also reached out to shape public policy, championing the cause of freer trade in particular. A native of India and a Cambridge University graduate in 1956 with a first in Economics Tripos, he has also studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Oxford University. Prof Bhagwati returned to India in 1961, where he taught at the Indian Statistical Institute and then the Delhi School of Economics. He went back to MIT in 1968, leaving it 12 years later as the Ford International Professor of Economics to join Columbia University. Prof Bhagwati was conferred the degree of Doctor of Social Sciences honoris causa.
