[2] As skrywer maak hy sy debuut in 1994 met die self-gepubliseerde Assevrijdag. [1] In 1999 verskyn sy eerste amptelike publikasie, 'n versameling verhale oor sy jeug, getiteld De kamer hiernaast, waarvoor hy genomineer is vir die NRC Literair Prijs. Dimitri Verhulst comes from a broken home and spent his childhood in foster homes and institutes. As a writer, he made his debut in 1999 with a collection of stories, De kamer hiernaast (E: The Room Next Door) about his youth. The novels Niets, niemand en redelijk stil (E: Nothing, Nobody, and Reasonably Quiet) published in 2000 and De verveling van de keeper (E: The Boredom of the Goalkeeper) of 2002 also cover the same topic. In 2001, Dimitri Verhulst published Liefde, tenzij anders vermeld (E: Love, Unless Otherwise Stated), a collection of poetry.
His breakthrough to the general public came in 2003, with Problemski Hotel in which he wrote about residents of an asylum-seekers’ centre in Arendonk (Belgium). In 2006 he published the novel De helaasheid der dingen' (E: The Misfortunates) and the novella Mevrouw Verona daalt de heuvel af (E: Mrs Verona Comes Down from the Hill). Biography
Verhulst was an unwanted child in a violent home and spent his later childhood in a foster home and a family replacing home.[1] He grew up Catholic.[2] As a writer, he made his debut in 1994 with the self-published Assevrijdag.[1] In 1999 his first official publication appeared, a collection of stories about his youth, De kamer hiernaast, for which he was nominated for the NRC Literair Prijs.[1] The novel Niets, niemand en redelijk stil (2000) is also about his youth, but De verveling van de keeper (2002) signals a change in form and is characterized by great social and political involvement.[3] In 2001, Verhulst published Liefde, tenzij anders
