William Paul Young is a Canadian author of Christian fiction.
Young was born in Alberta, Canada, but spent much of his early childhood in New Guinea (West Papua) with his missionary parents and three younger siblings. The family moved back to Canada while Young was in school, and he attended thirteen different schools before graduating. In recent years, Young has been open about the struggles he has dealt with as a TCK (Third Culture Kid) and survivor of childhood sexual abuse.
Young attended bible college, and later received a BA in Religion from Warner Pacific College in Portland, Oregon. Young married Kim Warren and held a number of jobs in early adulthood including working for a church and owning businesses in insurance, construction, and more. The couple had six children, and Christianity played a large role in the family. Young wrote The Shack, his first novel, as a gift for his children.

We live in a world where ‘normal’ does not truly exist except as a concept or wishful thought. For each of us, where and how we grew up plays a foundational role in our sense of ‘normal’, and only when we begin to experience the ‘bigness and diversity’ of the world are we tempted to evaluate our roots.
I thought the way I grew up was ‘normal’ but most would probably agree that my history and journey have been a bit unusual. Wm. Paul Young is a Canadian author. Young was the oldest of four. He spend the majority of his first decade with his missionary parents in the highlands of Netherlands New Guinea (West Papua), among the Dani, a tribal people. When he was six he was sent to a boarding school.
The manuscript, that later became The Shack, was intended only for his six kids and for a handful of close friends. After multiple rejections by publishers, Young and his friends published the book under the name of their newly created publishing company. The Shack was one of the top-selling fiction books of 2008 and will be a major motion picture in Spring 2017.
