“When Dime went away, my heart went with him. I didn’t think I’d ever really be able to do this again”: Vinnie Paul’s return from tragedy with Hellyeah

The US supergroup Hellyeah saw former Pantera/Damageplan drummer Vinnie Paul teaming up with members of Mudvayne and Nothingface to return to the fray following the death of his brother, guitarist Dimebag Darrell. In the spring of 2007, as the band prepared to release their self-titled debut album, Metal Hammer caught up with Vinnie – who passed away in 2018 - to talk rebirth, resurrection and how metal had changed while he was away.

On the morning of October 31st, 2006 news broke that a band had decided on a name for itself. The only thing giving this acutely unremarkable event any distinction was that this particular ensemble would include Nothingface bassist Jerry Montano and guitarist Tom Maxwell, Mudvayne singer Chad Gray and guitarist Greg Tribbett, and one-time Pantera/Damageplan drummer Vinnie. Hellyeah, stylized as HELLYEAH, was an American heavy metalsupergroup formed in Dallas, Texas, in 2006. The band's last lineup consisted of lead vocalist Chad Gray, guitarists Christian Brady and Tom Maxwell, bassist Kyle Sanders, and drummer Roy Mayorga. The idea to form a supergroup originated in 2000 on the Tattoo the Earth tour, although plans were constantly put on hold due to scheduling conflicts. The summer of 2006 allowed the band to take the project seriously and record its first album. Recorded at Chasin' Jason studio in Dimebag Darrell's backyard, their self-titled album entered the Billboard 200 at number 9,[1] selling 45,000 copies. They went on to release five more studio albums between 2010 and 2019. As of 2021, the band is on hiatus.
