More than 40 years since its release, veteran Malayalam director KG George’s 1980 film Mela has proved to be a milestone in many ways. "Thavakalai" Chittibabu (1975 – 2017) was an Indian actor and comedian who appeared in South Indian language films. He has acted in over 500 films in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Hindi and Sinhala.[1]

CHENNAI: 'Thavakalai' Chitti Babu, 42, who debuted in Tamil cinema as a child actor at the age of eight in K Bhagyaraj's 'Munthanai Mudichu', passed away on Sunday morning due to cardiac arrest at his home in Vadapalani.
The actor who has performed alongside Rajinikanth was part of around 50 films in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi during a career that commenced in the 1980s.
Thavakalai was working in a Malayalam film under production, prior to his death.
In a statement, South Indian Artistes' Association (SIAA), better known as Nadigar Sangam, condoled the death of the film actor who began his career in stage plays. Cremation will be carried out on Monday morning.
