Jewel's Biography
Jewel Kilcher was born May 23, 1974 in Payson, Utah. Her grandfather, Yule Kilcher, emigrated from Switzerland to Alaska and helped write the state charter. Jewel grew up on an 800-acre homestead with her parents and two brothers. They had little in the way of modern conveniences; there was no television and the bathroom was an outhouse. She spent much of her free time writing in her journal, writing poems, and singing. At age six, she began singing with her parents in dinner shows in local hotels. She even started yodeling. At eight, her parents divorced, and Jewel went to live with her father, Atz.
After the ninth grade, Jewel moved to Hawaii and lived with her aunt. There, she was beat up everyday because of her race. In a year's time, she earned enough money to return to Alaska and moved in with her mother, Nedra, in Anchorage. At 16, they moved to Seward, Alaska, 200 miles from Homer. Jewel earned a partial scholarship Interlochen, an arts school in Michigan, where she learned to play guitar despite being dyslexic.

Jewel Kilcher was born in Payton, Utah on May 23, 1974. Her parent's names are Atz and Lenedra (or Nedra) Kilcher. Jewel has two brothers, Shane and Little Atz. The family soon moved to Anchorage, Alaska. Jewel's name comes from Nedra who's middle name is Jewel, and from her grandfather Yule (Juel in his homeland). When Nedra got Jewel and her brothers involved in creativity workshops, Jewel discovered her talent for singing. Jewel would often sing with her mother. The song "This Little Bird" is included on Jewel's Spirit. When Jewel was around 6 years old, she began performing with her parents for small audiences. Her father helped her learn to yodel. Two years later, Atz and Nedra divorced. Jewel and her brothers were sent to live with their father on their 800-acre homestead in Homer. Jewel enjoyed being alone to write stories and poetry. Jewel loved to write and care for her horse Clearwater. A native Ottowa Indian tribe adopted Jewel when she was 14 and helped her realizie her gifts for speaking and writing from her heart. Who Is Jewel?
Singer-songwriter Jewel began her musical career at the age of six, performing with her musical parents. She played in San Diego coffeehouses, before signing a deal with Atlantic Records and releasing her first record, Pieces of You, in 1995. Along with selling more than 30 million albums, Jewel is a published writer, activist and actress, with screen credits that include Ang Lee's 1999 Civil War drama, Ride with the Devil.
