Benjamin John Saunders (born 5 August 1977 in Plymouth) is an English polar explorer, endurance athlete, and motivational speaker. He led the first return journey to the South Pole on foot via Shackleton and Scott's route in 2013–14,[1] and skied solo to the North Pole in 2004.[2] Saunders has skied more than 3,700 miles (6,000 km) on polar expeditions since 2001. He holds the record for the longest human-powered polar journey in history (2,888 km) and for the longest solo Arctic journey by a Briton (1,032 km).[3]
Biography
The elder of two boys, Saunders grew up in Devon and Kent, was educated at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, and worked as an instructor at the John Ridgway School of Adventure. Background
Benjamin Saunders was born in Warrington and educated at George Heriot’s School in Edinburgh. He received his first organ lessons at the age of sixteen at St Mary’s Metropolitan Cathedral, Edinburgh and two years later won an Organ Scholarship to Downing College, Cambridge, where he studied with Peter Hurford. Upon graduating, he held organist posts at the Cathedrals of St Giles’ Edinburgh, Blackburn, and Chester and continued organ studies with David Sanger, Ann Bond and Michel Bouvard.

Born in 1977, Ben Saunders has already four expeditions to the North Pole under his belt. He has skiied more than 1,500 miles on the Arctic pack ice.
Ben Saunders grew up in Devon and studied at the Royal Military Academy of Sandhurst; he is currently living in London. At 19, he was already very fond of the great outdoors and of great adventures; he spent four months in the Nepalese Himalayas, climbing several summits. He then worked as an Instructor at the John Ridgway School of Adventure in Scotland, considered one of the most difficult training schools of England.
Ben is an accomplished sportsman (although at school, he was considered in his younger days to be the fatty of the class and was always chosen last when a football team had to be picked).
