For nearly 20 years I would speak to Whitey Ford just about every couple of months. Lengthy conversations…laughs…memories.
Lucky me.
My last conversation I guess-about three, maybe four years ago. His lovely wife Joannie answered the phone. We talked for a couple of minutes. She called out to Whitey, “Spencer’s on the phone.”
He picked up. Could tell he was happy to hear from me and off we went.
Around five minutes later I heard the phone drop. About ready to hang up when Joannie got back on the phone. She explained that he was happy to hear from me, but after a few minutes she confessed that it’s usual that he forgets who he’s talking to and what he’s doing.
That was the last time I spoke to my friend. I’m now left only with memories… all good ones. Ed”Whitey” Ford. Astoria Eddie…. “The Chairman of the Board.”

Ross Spencer was born in Fillmore, Utah, and graduated from American Fork High School before enrolling at BYU.
Professor Spencer graduated from BYU with a degree in physics in 1974 and then earned a PhD in physics at the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1979. He then worked on fusion energy research at Los Alamos National Laboratory for five years before coming to BYU to teach in 1984. He previously served as the chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy and currently serves as a professor.
Brother Spencer served a mission in Germany and has served in the Church as a Sunday School teacher, a Scoutmaster, and a bishop.
Brother Spencer is married to Margo Eatough, who is also from American Fork and who graduated with a degree in music performance from BYU. They have five children.

Spencer Ross (born July 19, 1940) is an Americansportscaster. With the exception of the New York Mets, Ross has called play-by-play for every professional New York metropolitan area sports franchise, including the Yankees of MLB, the Nets and Knicks of the NBA, and Jets and Giants of the NFL. He has also called games for the Americans of the ABA and, in the NHL, for the New Jersey Devils, New York Islanders and the New York Rangers. Outside of New York, he has called games for the Florida State Seminoles and Boston Celtics. Nationally, he has worked for the NFL on NBC, Major League Baseball on CBS Radio, the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament on Westwood One, and was the lead play-by-play announcer for the 1992 USA Olympic Dream Team with Dick Vitale.[1][2]
