In the spring of 2022, Father Michael J. Burns walked 150 miles over the course of 12.5 days on the El Camino de Santiago, following the trek that pilgrims have traced for more than 1,000 years. Similarly, through his 50 years of priesthood, he has followed in the faithful steps of his parents, received encouragement from prominent priests in the Diocese of Trenton and been open to the path to which God has called him.

Michael Burns was the Chairman of the Board, Chief Executive Officer and President of Dana Incorporated, a global manufacturer of technology driveline, sealing and thermal-management products, from 2004 until his retirement in 2008. He joined Dana Incorporated in 2004 after 34 years with General Motors Company. Mike had served as President of General Motors Europe since 1998, and while there, led a turnaround of GM’s European division that resulted in market share gains through product development realignment, quality enhancement, and significant cost reductions. He was in charge of the overall coordination of Opel/Vauxhall, Saab, GM Daewoo Europe, and GM’s North American vehicle activities in Europe, as well as the overall coordination of GM’s alliance activities with Fiat. He was also a member of the GM Automotive Strategy Board and was responsible for GM’s worldwide quality process.
Mike joined the UPS Board of Directors in 2005 and serves on the Audit Committee.

Reverend Michael J. Burns
The Reverend Michael Burns, a retired priest of the Diocese of San Jose, died peacefully at Stanford Hospital on Tuesday, June 7, 2022. He was 90 years old.
Born on August 22, 1931 in Oakland to Michael J. Burns and Sarah Curran, Father Burns attended St. Joseph’s School in Alameda and St. Joseph’s College in Mountain View. In 1952 he entered St. Patrick’s Seminary in Menlo Park and was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Merlin Guilfoyle on June 14, 1958 at St. Mary’s Cathedral for the Archdiocese of San Francisco.
Father Burns’ first assignment was parochial vicar at St. Rose Parish in Santa Rosa. This was followed by assignments at St. Elizabeth Parish in San Francisco, Sacred Heart Parish in San Jose, the Church of the Resurrection in Sunnyvale and Visitacion Church in San Francisco. In 1979, he was appointed pastor of Santa Teresa Church in San Jose. Upon the creation of the Diocese of San Jose in 1981, Father Burns remained in the new Diocese. In 1985 he was appointed to St. Mary’s Parish in Los Gatos as associate pastor. On April 1,
