Disability Action Week launched by inspirational role model

National Disability Insurance Scheme Queensland Ambassador Karni Liddell inspired hundreds of primary school children living with a disability at the Is Everybody Here Day event held at the Sunshine Coast Recreation Centre today (September 12).

Division 3 Councillor Peter Cox said Disability Action Week, held from September 11-17, was an important celebration as one in five Queenslanders are either living with a disability or their lives have been touched by disability in some way.

“As this year’s celebrations come at the same time as the Paralympic Games underway in Rio, the 2016 theme for Disability Action Week is Inclusion: it’s a game changer,” Cr Cox said.

“The theme aims to promote the inclusion of people with disability in all levels of sport and the community.

“Reinforced through the Sunshine Coast Social Strategy, council is proud to partner with Department of National Parks, Sport and Racing to deliver the Is Everybody Here Day.”

Cr Cox said the Is Everybody Here Day aimed to raise awareness of the

Paralympic athlete, Karni Liddell, recounts her childhood and how her parents (as well as life struggles) have pushed her to achieve not only success as a Paralympian, but to be happy and fulfilled in life.

It may seem odd that a person who holds a double degree in communications and has spent 12 years on the keynote speaking circuit would find answering the question “so, what do you speak about?” extremely difficult to answer. I usually say my journey to the Paralympics, but Reality TV has ruined the word journey!

I know for sure that I love to speak and I truly love people and this is why I have embarked on a gruelling Masters in Clinical Social Work, which has seen me complete 1,000 hours of a placement at the Mater Children’s Hospital.

I am specialising in trauma and diagnosis counselling, and when I tell people what I’m doing I am typically shocked by their responses, which range from “wow aren’t you noble,” to “God why would you want to do that” or “I couldn’t think of anything worse.”

Now, you may think that hearing these responses may deter me from my new adventure,

Karni Liddell (born 1 March 1979) is a Paralympic swimming competitor from Australia.

Personal

Liddell was born on 1 March 1979 in Rockhampton, Queensland.[1][2] She is a radio presenter for 4BC.[3]

At twelve months old, Liddell was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy a rare neuromuscular wasting disease. Karni was misdiagnosed for 40 years and has recently been diagnosed with Congenital Titinopathy which is also a neuromuscular wasting disease.[4] Karni was diagnosed via a whole genome sequencing test performed in Europe in 2019 and Karni and her family had been looking for a diagnosis for the past 12 years and this has been a lengthy, traumatic and expensive process for her family. Her parents were told by doctors that she would never be able to walk and that she would not live past her teens.

Liddell, alongside Branka Pupovac, Hamish MacDonald and Charmaine Dalli, was one of eighteen Australian Paralympians photographed by Emma Hack for a nude calendar.[5&
