Saitô Hajime was born as a son of Gokenin in Edo. He killed a Hatamoto when he was around 18 and he had to flee Edo. He joined the Mibu Roshigumi in Kyoto in 1863. In 1865, he became captain of the 3rd unit of the Shinsengumi. When Itô Kashitarô's group formed the Goryô Eji, Saito joined them as a spy and discovered their plan of assassination of Kondô Isami which resulted in Ito Kashitaro's assassination by the Shinsengumi (Incident at Aburano Koji).

Saitō Hajime (斎藤 一), known as Hajime Saito in the English-languageanimedubs, is a fictional character from the Rurouni Kenshinmanga and anime series created by Nobuhiro Watsuki. Being a fan of the Shinsengumi, Watsuki created Saitō as an anti-heroic and a foil to Himura Kenshin, the main character of the story, while basing him on the real life Shinsengumi member of the same name.

Set during a fictional version of Japan in the Meiji period, Saitō, known as the "Mibu no Okami" (壬生の狼, lit. "Wolf of Mibu"), is the former third squad captain of the Shinsengumi, a pro-shogunateforce. During the Bakumatsu, he had a long time rivalry with Himura Kenshin, an assassin of the Imperialist cause. In the series, he is initially introduced as an antagonist who encounters and once again duels with Kenshin. Saito’s real family name was “Yamaguchi”. He took the name “Saito” when he fled Edo for killing a man, but the reason for his choice is not known. It is also unknown why he retained his childhood name of “Hajime”. Tradition has it that he was given that name because he was either born of the first or second day of the New Year or else during the first month of the New Year in 1844. His “imina” or “hidden name” is unknown.
