Stephen Mandel was born July 18, 1945, moving to Edmonton from Windsor, Ontario in 1972 after having received an Associate of Arts Degree from Lincoln College in Lincoln, Illinois; a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio; and his Master’s in Political Science from the University of Windsor.

In Edmonton, Mr. Mandel became a successful businessman and entrepreneur. Edmonton also came to know him as one of its friendliest and most approachable mayors. During his tenure as mayor from 2004 – 2013, Mr. Mandel’s dedication to improve the city’s image and reputation was always apparent. Stephen Frank Mandel Jr. (born March 12, 1956) is an American hedge fund manager, investor, and philanthropist. He founded Lone Pine Capital in 1997, after working as the managing director at Tiger Management.[1] According to Forbes, Mandel has an estimated net worth of US$3.9 billion as of August 2022.[2]

Early life and education

Mandel is the son of Ann (née Safford) and Stephen Frank Mandel, grew up in a Jewish family, and was raised in Darien, Connecticut.[3][4][5] He has a brother, Edward Safford Mandel.[6] In 1974, Mandel graduated from the Phillips Exeter Academy. In 1978, he graduated from Dartmouth College with a Bachelor of Arts in government and was a member of the Psi Upsilon fraternity.[1] He also has an M.B.A. from Harvard University.[7]

Steve Mandel is founder and managing director of Lone Pine Capital Management, a global long/short and long-only equity money manager based in Greenwich, Connecticut. Prior to founding Lone Pine in 1997, Mr. Mandel was managing director and consumer analyst at Tiger Management Corp., a mass-market retailing analyst at Goldman Sachs, and a consultant at Mars and Co. He is a founder and board member of the Lone Pine Foundation, whose mission is to help children and families in the greater New York City area.

Mr. Mandel is chair of the board of Dartmouth College, a trustee of Teach for America, and a member of the Harvard Business School Board of Dean's Advisors. He is a former trustee of Phillips Exeter Academy and The Children's School in Stamford, Connecticut.

He is a graduate of Dartmouth College and Harvard Business School.
