Sohrab Sepehri (October 7, 1928 – April 21, 1980) was a notable Iranian poet and a painter.
He was born in Kashan, Iran. He is considered to be one of the five most famous Iranian poets who have practiced modern poetry. Other practitioners of this form were Nima Youshij, Ahmad Shamlou, Mehdi Akhavan-Sales, and Forough Farrokhzad.
Sepehri was also one of Iran's foremost modernist painters.
Well-versed in Buddhism, mysticism and Western traditions, he mingled the Western concepts with Eastern ones, thereby creating a kind of poetry unsurpassed in the history of Persian literature. To him, new forms were new means to express his thoughts and feelings.
His poetry has been translated into many languages including English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Swedish, Arabic, Turkish and Russian. An English translation of his selected poems by Ali Salami appeared in 2003.

Sohrab Sepehri (Kashan)

Sohrab Sepehri is considered as one of the unique contemporary poets, whose poems can be studied as modern poetry. He was from Kashan and ascendant of Lesan-ol-Molk, scholar and historian during Qajar dynasty. He was born in 1307 SH in Kashan, but he spent most of his life in Tehran. He was graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Tehran. As a poet and talented painter, he developed his own style in both. Japanese style influenced his painting and in poetry, he is inspired by Buddhist mysticism.

Simultaneously with the proclamation of the constitution, there were many changings in literature, especially in poetry that creates a literary revolution. Following European, the Iranian poets, such as Abolqasem Lahouti, Sems Kesmai, Jafar Khamenei, Taqi Rafat, wrote the poems, in which there was no sign of equalization of hemistich and syllables or fixed position of rhyme. These changes reached its highest level by Nimā Yushij, and then Ahmad Shamlu, Mehdi Akhavan-Sales, Sohrab Sepehri, and Forough Farrokhzad continued his way as the followers
