Alias Grace
1996 novel by Margaret Atwood
For the television series, see Alias Grace (miniseries).
Alias Grace is a historical fiction novel by Canadian writer Margaret Atwood. First published in 1996 by McClelland & Stewart, it won the Giller Prize and was shortlisted for the Booker Prize.
The story fictionalizes the notorious 1843 murders of Thomas Kinnear and his housekeeper Nancy Montgomery in Canada West. Two servants of the Kinnear household, Grace Marks and James McDermott, were convicted of the crime. McDermott was hanged and Marks was sentenced to life imprisonment.[1]
Although the novel is based on factual events, Atwood constructs a narrative with a fictional doctor, Simon Jordan, who researches the case. While Jordan is ostensibly conducting research into criminal behaviour, he slowly becomes personally involved in the Marks story and seeks to reconcile his perception of the mild-mannered woman he sees with the murder of which she has been convicted.[2]

Grace Marks is an Irish maid, convicted at sixteen for the murder of her employer, Thomas Kinnear, and his housekeeper, Nancy Montgomery in 1843. During her trial, Reformers believed her to be innocent, and the Tories believed her to be guilty. Grace is a bit of a mystery – a woman who tells different accounts of the same story to different audiences. She seems both genuine and manipulative at the same time. Grace is a beautiful young woman with pale complexion, blue eyes, a heart-shaped face and strawberry blonde hair. Grace is 5'3" (1.60 m) and has a medium to slim physique. Grace often wears worn out clothing mainly because of her financial state and salary. Pardoned accessory to an 1843 Canadian murder Grace Marks A sketch of Marks alias "Mary Whitney" and James McDermott at their trial Grace Marks (c. 1828 – after c. 1873) was an Irish-Canadianmaid who was involved in the 1843 murder of her employer Thomas Kinnear and his housekeeper, Nancy Montgomery, in Richmond Hill, Ontario. Her conviction for the murder of Kinnear was controversial and sparked much debate about whether Marks was actually instrumental in the murder or merely an unwitting accessory. Marks was the subject of Margaret Atwood's historical fiction novel Alias Grace and its adaptations in other media. Marks was born and raised in Ulster, Ireland. Her father, John Marks, was a stonemason and an abusive alcoholic. She, along with her parents and eight siblings, immigrated to Upper Canada in 1840, when Grace was twelve. Her mother died on the ship en route
