In this Philippine name, the middle name or maternal family name is Veloso and the surname or paternal family name is Abueva.

Napoleon "Billy" Veloso Abueva (January 26, 1930 – February 16, 2018) was known as the "Father of Modern Philippine Sculpture" Through Proclamation No. 1539. He was proclaimed National Artist for Sculpture in 1976 when he was 46, making him the youngest recipient of the award to date.

Biography and career

Billy Abueva, as he was fondly called, was born in Tagbilaran, Bohol, to Teodoro Lloren Abueva, born in Duero, Bohol, a Bohol congressman and Purificación González Veloso, born in Cebu, president of the Women's Auxiliary Service.[1] Abueva had six other brothers and sisters: Teodoro Jr., Purificacion, José, Amelia Martinez, Teresita Floro, and Antonio.[2] Born Esabelio Veloso Abueva, he was named after the younger sister of his paternal grandmother, Isabel.[3]

In 1976, Napoleon V. Abueva, then 46, was the youngest Filipino to become a National Artist. Known as the Father of Modern Philippine Sculpture, he is a master in both academic representational style and modern abstract. His works have been executed using almost all kinds of materials, including hard wood like molave, acacia, langka wood, ipil, kamagong, palm wood and bamboo, adobe, metal, stainless steel, cement, marble, bronze, iron, alabaster, coral, and brass. He even combines different materials, like wood with metal and stone.

Under a Pura Villanueva-Kalaw Scholarship, Abueva graduated from the University of the Philippines School of Fine Arts in 1953 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture. He received
much recognition as early as his college years, during which he was mentored by Guillermo Tolentino, the first National Artist for Sculpture and creator of the UP Oblation. For three years in a row (1951-1953), he won first prize and best entry awards in sculpture in the Art Association of the Philippines annual competition. One of his works from this period

Napoleon V. Abueva (1930-2018) was recognized as the Father of Modern Philippine Sculpture. His modernist approach can be seen in his exploration of various media such as molave, acacia, langka, ipil, kamagong, palm, adobe, cement, marble, bronze, iron, brass, among others. It is also apparent in the monumental character of his outdoor and public sculptures and the promotion of Philippine themes in his subject matter. His works adorn public buildings such as the altar and hanging crucifix at the UP Diliman Chapel, mural at the National Center for Mental Health, and façade relief at the Insular Life Building in Makati. He also created the memorial cross reliefs at Dambana ng Kagitingan in Mt. Samat Bataan, Sandugo Monumentin Tagbilaran Bohol, and Balangiga Encounter Monument in Balangiga Samar.
